Natif de l'Iowa (USA), Henry Hey a grandi dans un environnement musical et étudié le piano classique dès son plus jeune âge. Henry a également étudié la trompette, ce qui lui a permis d'ailleurs de remporter quelques concours avec des concertos pour trompette et surtout d'intégrer l'Académie des Arts d'Interlochen (Michigan). Plus tard, Henri découvre le jazz et sa double expérience musicale lui permet d'évoluer dans cet art avec ces deux instruments. Après ses études à l'University Of North Texas, il s'installe à New York où il deviendra rapidement un pianiste indépendant très recherché et très apprécié dans le monde du jazz.

Henry a effectué de nombreuses tournées et on le retrouve sur bon nombre d'enregistrements notamment avec les trompettistes Till Broenner (Verbe) Kenny Wheeler, Alex Sipiaguine, le saxophoniste Seamus Blake (Fresh Sound),le vibraphoniste Joe Locke (Sirocco), les saxophonistes Bill Evans (CES) et Tim Garland, le batteur Bill Bruford, le trompettistes Shunzo Ono (Min-le), le bassiste Victor Bailey (CES), le batteur Jeff "Tain" Watt, et beaucoup d'autres.

Il forme en 2002 le "Henri Hey Trio" aux côtés de Jochen Rueckert (batteur) et John Hebert (basse). De leur vaste expérience à chacun, sortira l'album ""Watershed" sorti en septembre 2003, un album de jazz intimiste, somme toute assez proche de l'univers musical des Songbooks de Rod Stewart et ce n'est donc pas étonnant si nous retrouvons Henry pianiste du Rod Band précisément à l'époque des Songbooks dont il participera à l'enregistrement notamment sur l'album "As Time Goes By... (The Great American Songbook : Volume II (2003) pour les titres "I'm in The Mood For Love", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" et sur le titre qui donne son nom à l'album "As Time Goes By" (un duo avec Queen Latifah).

Henry participera aussi en 2006 à l'enregistrement du concert promo de "Still The Same" à New York au Nokia Theatre.

What makes you become a musician?
I have been a musician since I was 4 1/2. Music has always been a part of my life.

Why have you chosen to play the piano instead of another instrument?
Piano is like home to me. I played trumpet (as well) for many years, but piano is still home.

Can you introduce you in only 3 words?
Musician, Sailor, New Yorker

Do you have some hobbies apart from the music? Sailing, I think?
Yes. Certainly sailing is my other passion. I do a lot of it, and have been doing so for many years. I feel like there are a lot of parallels with music.

When you play sailing on Stage it was particularly, isn’t, for a fan of sailing like you?
Actually, I didn't really think about the connection between the sailing that I do and the song. I believe that song is more about a voyage. I don't usually sail to get anywhere in particular - I enjoy the experience.

Henry you start like pianist of Rod Stewart since 2002 isn’t? Can you talk about that?
It was a great experience. I was happy to be involved.

Back to the past...Do you remember how you met Rod and the others members of the band?
Conrad Korsch and I were part of a group of musicians who were asked to play in support of Rod at the beginning of his 'Great American Songbook' period. Conrad Korsch was actually somewhat instrumental in my being part of this band as he had recommended me to the contractor. We played on television appearances with Rod to support the first two albums. After the second album, it came time to tour with this music and they asked me to join the touring band and to become the musical director for that portion of the show. I was asked if Conrad should be along with us as well and of course - he was a clear choice, and I was happy to return the favor. Conrad and I joined the touring band and there it is.

What do you like the most when you were on tour? Do you still touring?
It was great to be part of that history and to make friendships with the musicians in the band.
I still tour quite a bit with a variety of artists, although producing, recording and scoring work tends to keep me busy in New York.

What is your news and what are your future plans?
I am part of an instrumental jam/jazz group that has been taking off - especially in europe.

We played at the north sea jazz festival this summer and will be touring for a month in Europe in the fall. That band contains other well known musicians such as bassist Tim Lefebvre (bassist for Chris Botti & Jamie Cullem) and Drummer Keith Carlock (drummer for John Mayer, Steely Dan, James Taylor and others)

Did the gig remind you memories or anecdotes?
What is your best memory as a member of the Rod Stewart Band?
Playing with a great band and a top notch artist. I have worked with a lot of artists - before and after Rod. He is an artist who really cares about his show and the music. A real professional.

What do you enjoy the most: playing in big stadium in front of thousands people or playing in small venues
I must admit that I ultimately prefer small venues. The arenas and stadiums are amazing, but one of the most important parts of music - to me - is making a personal connection. It's easier to witness this in a small venue.

What kind of music do you listen to?
Pretty much everything (literally)

And what do you think of the actual band of Rod Stewart?
Great guys. great players.

Are you still in contact with band members and Rod?
Certainly. I speak to several of them fairly often.

If you had to write a song tonight what topic and theme would you choose?
I would write about how I don't want summer to end. I'm having too much fun this summer in NYC.

If you had 3 wishes for the years to come, what would they be?
1 - for us to be saved from ourselves. It's pretty clear that we (humans) are screwing things up on the planet at a record pace. Between the climate issues, the overpopulation, the environmental catastrophes, and general greed (global financial ruin) - we are on a fast track to no good. BIG problems.

2 - to continue to have the opportunities that I do now - and create music

3 - to do more sailing!

Qu'est-ce qui t'a fait devenir musicien ?

Je fais de la musique depuis l'âge de 4 ans et demi. La musique a toujours fait partie de ma vie.

Pourquoi as-tu choisi de jouer du piano au lieu d'un autre instrument ?

Le piano, c'est mon jardin. J'ai joué de la trompette (aussi) pendant de nombreuses années mais j'ai gardé le piano.

Peux-tu te présenter en trois mots ?

Musicien, navigateur, new-yorkais

As-tu des hobbies en dehors de la musique ? La voile, je crois ?

Oui. Assurément, la voile est mon autre passion. J'en fais beaucoup et depuis de nombreuses années. Je pense qu'il y a beaucoup de parallèles avec la musique.

Lorsque tu joues "Sailing" sur scène, c'est un peu particulier, n'est-ce pas, pour un fan de voile comme toi ?

En fait, je ne pense pas qu'il y ait vraiment un lien entre la voile que je pratique et la chanson "Sailing". Je crois que cette chanson parle plutôt d'un voyage. Je n'ai pas l'habitude de naviguer pour aller quelque part en particulier. J'aime les expériences.

Henry, tu as débuté comme pianiste de Rod Stewart en 2002 n'est-ce pas ? Peux-tu nous en parler ?

Cela a été une expérience formidable. J'ai été heureux d'être impliqué.

Retour sur le passé ... Te souviens-tu comment tu as rencontré Rod et les autres membres du groupe ?

Conrad Korsch et moi faisions partie d'un groupe de musiciens qui ont été invités à jouer en renfort pour Rod au début de sa "période des Great Américan Songbook". Conrad Korsch avait en réalité un peu joué dans ma participation au groupe puisqu'il m'avait recommandé. Nous avons joué lors des apparitions de Rod à la télévision pour les deux premiers albums. Après le deuxième album, lorsque le moment est venu de tourner avec cette musique, ils m'ont demandé de rejoindre le groupe en tournée et de devenir le directeur musical de cette partie du spectacle. On m'a demandé si Conrad devait être des nôtres - bien sûr, le choix était clair -, j'ai été heureux de lui retourner l'ascenseur. Conrad et moi avons rejoint le groupe en tournée et voilà.

Qu'aimais-tu le plus lorsque tu étais en tournée ? Tournes-tu encore ?

C'était génial de faire partie de cette histoire et de lier des amitiés avec les musiciens de ce groupe.

J'ai tourné un peu avec d'autres artistes, bien que la production, l'enregistrement et l'écriture me retiennent à New York.

Quelles sont tes nouvelles et quels sont tes projets futurs ?

Je fais partie d'un groupe de jazz jam instrumental - qui commence à décoller - en particulier en Europe.

Nous avons joué au festival de jazz de la Mer du Nord cet été et nous serons en tournée pendant un mois en Europe à l'automne. As-tu des souvenirs de concert ou des anecdotes ?

Quel est ton meilleur souvenir en tant que membre du Rod Band ?

Jouer avec un grand groupe et un artiste de grande envergure. J'ai travaillé avec beaucoup d'artistes - avant et après Rod. C'est un artiste qui se soucie vraiment de son spectacle et de la musique. Un vrai professionnel.

Qu'est-ce que tu apprécies le plus : jouer dans un grand stade devant des milliers de personnes ou jouer dans de petites salles.

Je dois avouer que je préfère finalement les petites salles. Les arénas et les stades sont étonnants, mais l'une des parties la plus importante de la musique - pour moi - c'est d'établir un contact personnel. Il est plus facile de faire cela dans une petite salle.

Quel genre de musique écoutes-tu ?

A peu près tout (littéralement)

Et que penses-tu du groupe actuel de Rod Stewart ?

Super mecs et de grands musiciens.

Es-tu toujours en contact avec les membres du groupe et Rod ?

Certainement.Je parle à plusieurs d'entre eux assez souvent.

Si tu avais à écrire une chanson ce soir, quel sujet et quel thème choisirais-tu ?

Je voudrais écrire sur la fin de l'été que je ne veux pas voir venir. Je m'amuse trop cet été à New York.

Si tu avais trois souhaits pour les années à venir, quels seraient-ils ?

1. Que nous puissions être sauvés de nous-même. Il est assez clair que nous (les humains) bousillons les choses sur cette planète à une vitesse record. Entre les questions relatives au climat, la surpopulation, les catastrophes environnementales et la cupidité générale (ruine financière mondiale), nous sommes sur une très mauvaise pente. GROS problèmes.

2. De continuer à avoir la possibilité de faire ce que je fais maintenant - et créer de la musique

3. De faire plus de voile !

A native of Iowa, Henry Hey grew up in a musical environment and studied classical piano from his early age. Henry also studied the trumpet, which also allowed him to win a few competitions with concertos and especially to integrate the Interlochen Arts Academy (Michigan). Later, Henry discovers jazz and his dual musical experience allows him to grow in this art with these two instruments. After studying at the University Of North Texas, he moved to New York where he quickly became a highly sought after freelance pianist and highly regarded in the world of jazz.

Henry has toured extensively and is featured on many recordings including the trumpeters Till Broen (Word) Kenny Wheeler, Alex Sipiagin, saxophonist Seamus Blake (Fresh Sound), vibraphonist Joe Locke (Sirocco), saxophonists Bill Evans (ESC) and Tim Garland, drummer Bill Bruford, the trumpeters Shunzo Ono (Min-le), bassist Victor Bailey (ESC), drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, and many others.

He formed in 2002 "Henry Hey Trio alongside Jochen Rueckert (drums) and John Hebert (bass). Born from their extensive experience, the album "Watershed" release in September 2003, an intimate jazz album, actually quite close to the world of music Songbooks Rod Stewart and it is not surprising if we find pianist Rod Henry Band precisely at the time of Songbooks which he will attend the registration on the album include "As Time Goes By ... (The Great American Songbook: Volume II (2003) for the titles "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Do not Get Around Much Anymore" and the title which gives its name to the album "As Time Goes By "(a duet with Queen Latifah).

Henry will also participate, in october 2006, to the promo concert for Rod Stewart's album "Still The Same" in New York at Nokia Theatre.
