How did you start in music? How did you become a guitarist?
In high school in Oceanside,
California, I was a surfer (and still I am) and guitarist. Many of my friends have
become professionals in the surfing world and for my part I became a professional
guitarist. It came naturally for me.
In addition to the guitar, are there other instruments you play?
A bit of drums and
I sing on my record but I am not Rod Stewart.
With whom have you ever played?
Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Justin Timberlake, Terrence
Trent d'Arby, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Michael Hutchance of INXS, and tons
of others and now I also played with Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks and David Cook
LIVE MUSIC AMERICAN IDOLS, but I also sold a pair of million solo albums.
What kind of music do you write, and do you prefer playing?
I love vintage rock 70s,
funk and R & B.
What do you do when you're not on tour?
I surf around the world and I make some safaris
in Kenya.
What are your tour plans for the future?
For the tour, not sure. I have my own music
TV show in Canada, now it keeps me super busy, but I think I'll do some dates in
Europe and Asia in 2009.
You know the songs of Rod before joining his band?
I love him like a big brother,
he has been very good to me and began to teach me how to do well. I think about him
all the time, the house in which I live is my thanks to him not only the money he
paid me, but mostly thanks to his advice. I wanted to buy him a Mercedes Benz and
he said no ... will buy a house and I did.
Were you a fan of Rod before joining the
Band?
I was a crazy fan.
How did you manage to get the job with Rod?
Pure luck, I began to become popular in Los Angeles in 1988 and made a "beef" with Andy Taylor of Duran Duran who was trying to record the CD Out Of Order. I had, by Andy, the luck to get an audition for Rod and I was immediately embedded in the adventure. Thank you Andy, your help has changed my life forever.
What was the best audience for you (Rod)?
Each of them on the "Out of Order Tour"
have been enormous, but as always the nights of the Los Angeles Forum and Madison
Square Garden have been epic.
You liked her tour with Rod?
You mean, if I liked? Certainly yes! The best moment
of my life, the group was like a football team, we went everywhere together, we made
holidays together, we rocked together, we fought together. A true band of brothers.
I do not think I relive it one day, we had some things that only the big rock bands
were, it was a unique moment.
What is the strangest thing you've ever done on stage?
In a show, Rod wanted me to
disguise in himself, makeup artists were then used to make my hair to stand on end.
Which Rod's title you most prefer to play the guitar?. What is Rod's title who comes closest to your musical world?
loved all the songs co-
These trips by private jet with Rod, you can tell us more?
Well, I was a kid, just
out of school and I joined the group Rod. Just eight days later, we had to play at
the Stadium of Puerto Rico. I was sitting next to Rod in his jet and he tapped me
on the shoulder ... Oh my god, I realized that it was Rod Stewart and I was with
him every day in his private plane ... There is a worse way to live!
Do you have any amusing anecdotes along with Rod to tell us?
Of course a lot, but
many are not telling. You should know that Rod is a real live wire and he's often
the instigator of incidents in which he takes us. The jet pilot in wash DC, one night
we were bored, to take us to Atlanta for a party then back again to DC the next morning
for the show (and what a party, our band and 30 girls) or when we would pull up to
a club in a limo then get the driver to tell the door man to sort us out and while
he would be outside talking one of us (a lot of times Rod) would climb through the
cubby hole into the drivers seat and we would still the limo and watch the driver
run down the street after us.
Are you still in contact with Rod or have you met recently?
I'll see him from time
to time and we see either in restaurant or bar. I love him very much and I owe him
a lot.
Do you throw your mediators in the audience?
Of course, I throw them all the time
in the crowd, once it's Rod himself, who gave my guitar in the audience, it was very
funny.
Signs you and have you taken lessons?
I taught myself by ear on his own.
What is the guitar with which you prefer playing?
I have over a hundred guitars and
they are all special, for one thing or another.
Who are your favorite guitarists?
Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Elliot Easton
and the late Mick Ronson was the best!
Can you give us your opinion on the professional level on Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Robin
Le Mesurier, Jim Cregan, Andy Taylor, Jeff Golub, Donald Kirkpatrick and Paul Warren?
I
love Woody, he's even a friend, he even painted a picture of me (I can not afford
but it is to sell $ 20,000 in a gallery), he also played on my albums. I still love
to speak about Jeff Beck, I was born in America, and Jeff loves my people and this
is the best guitarist ever. I owe a lot to Jeff Golub, he taught me so much on the
guitar and he took me under his wing since a kid with no experience and we are very
good friends. I think his new guitarist, Paul Warren, is excellent. All others passe
for bastards.
What are your future plans?
I'm still on my TV series and I played the Rock whenever
I can, only most of these artists are so boring that it is not exciting. I would
like that Rod would allow me to play again with him and he does a good old album
Rock.
Have you ever played one day in France, are you already come?
I love playing in France,
I came to play last year in Monaco (2007).
Can you say (write) a word in French for readers Forum "Rod Stewart on Air Site"
Yes
yes baby
Thank you for this interview, Mr. Stevie Salas
Comment as-
Etais-
J'étais un fan fou.
Comment as-
A coup sûr oui !
As-
As-
J'adore jouer en France, je suis venu jouer l'année dernière à Monaco (2007).
Peux-
Oui oui bébé.
Merci pour cette interview, M. Stevie Salas.
